The other day, I asked my math teacher for help on a kind of problem I was consistently fucking up. I feel really self-conscious when it comes to doing math, because it was one of the few subjects I couldn’t grasp even as a small child. And it’s obvious whenever I ask for help, because I always come off as so reluctant to ask for help. My reading and writing levels were always much higher than my grade level, I enjoyed learning, never had to study. I was that kind of obnoxious little kid that just knew everything (I peaked at like 11, okay).

He told me that when he was younger, he was nearly illiterate and couldn’t do basic arithmetic without struggling. He was small and he was kind of geeky, and the only thing he was good at was running. He barely graduated high school, and then he joined the Army and actually got to be decent at math. And then really good. And then amazing. He said it helped to just do at least one math problem a day between things that he loved doing.

I’m a classic nerd. I like comic books, reading, watching movies, playing video games, reading about scientific breakthroughs. He asked what kind of video games I liked playing, I said action and adventure and games with artistry and soul (Journey, Unfinished Swan, Flower, etc.) as well as anything with Lord of the Rings attached to it. I’m a sucker for Lord of the Rings. My dad gave me The Hobbit for Christmas when I was in the 3rd grade, and it was a world I just fell into and still love.

My professor laughed and said that when he was in the 7th grade, he was really sick for like three weeks. His older sister had this Lord of the Rings/Hobbit calendar with Tolkein’s drawings on it, and it just fascinated him and he asked his sister if she had the books. It took him an entire school year to read The Hobbit because he read at a 4th or 5th grade level. Then he started on Lord of the Rings and he finished them by the summer after 8th grade. It boosted his reading levels, though he still had trouble with English class throughout high school because he couldn’t focus on something that didn’t interest him.

According to him, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings saved his life. I told him that reading in general saved mine, because it redirected my focus from bad things that were happening all the time. The Hobbit was the first book that captured my attention in a way that I became fascinated with the world the story was set in. He told me that he genuinely believes that I can get an A on everything he assigns from here on out, because he has that kind of faith in my ability to learn and said that I seem very bright.

So when I’m ready to cry because I don’t understand a mathematical concept like I was ready to about twenty minutes ago, I just need to remember that and I’ll be okay.

And like it says at the top of every quiz and test that we do in his class, I need to relax, breathe, and do my best.

I’m in a show. It’s a mini musical that’s part of 11 little mini musicals. I’m going to be the lead in one as a tough biker chick. It’s an original show by one of the guys who keeps our theater from falling apart. I sang Video Games by Lana del Rey and he offered me the role.

This also applies to video games and comic books and pretty much all forms of media. The idea that you need to put a woman in danger so that you can care about her means that you just don’t know how to write an actual woman.
